Program Overview
The programs are in operation at all eight elementary school sites and both middle schools.
All SLUSD students are eligible to participate in an Expanded Learning Program. Students can ONLY enroll at the program located at the school they attend. We do not provide drop-in services.
SLUSD receives two funding streams for the After School Expanded Learning Programs from the California Department of Education; After School Education & Safety Program (ASES) and Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P). Starting in the 2022-2023 school year ASES & ELO-P was implemented as one comprehensive program. SLUSD partners with the Boys and Girls Club of San Leandro (BGCSL) to coordinate and operate the programs.
Through ELO-P funding the BGCSL offers 30 non-school days of programming each year, which is often referred to as intersession.
After School staff work directly with teachers, staff, families and community based organizations in order to best serve students and provide high quality programming.
Four Major Components
1. Academic Support
The academic component supports academic success by creating links to classroom learning by offering homework support, small group or individual tutoring, and mentoring.
2. Enrichment Opportunities
The enrichment component offers both traditional and non-traditional activities designed to build knowledge and enhance creative expression.
3. Recreational Activities
We encourage personal growth through competitive and non-competitive sports by building teamwork and a healthy competitive spirit, developing relationships, and having fun.
4. Community Building
The Expanded Learning programs foster a sense of community among students with a youth development model with a focus on serving the social-emotional needs of students.
