Topic: The Graduate Profile

Did you know that the San Leandro School district has a Graduate Profile that articulates its “shared vision that identifies a set of student outcomes to define what all graduates should know and be able to do to be prepared for post-secondary education, career, and civic participation?”

In this session, we will familiarize ourselves with the graduate profile and consider how the parents/caregivers community supports our young people to realize their academic potential.

Topic: Dealing with Bullies

There are more ways than ever for children and teens to experience bullying.  It can take place at school, in the neighborhood or online. Bullying affects both the children who are being bullied and the adults who care for that child.

Topic: Parental Guilt

Parents and Caregivers have many competing and conflicting demands. We have to juggle the logistics of housework, working the job, keeping up with homework and maintaining our personal hygiene.  One piece of critical feedback from our children or another adult can trigger parental guilt: Am I doing a good enough job raising this child? We will explore parental guilt and how we counter the shame that can arise from constant criticism that we create in our minds.

The role of the parent and caregiver is so important to the academic, social, and emotional development of the child. It is both a rewarding job, but it is also challenging. What support do you need as a parent to prevent burnout, overwhelm, and disconnection from others? Prioritizing your children can’t be at the expense of deeply damaging yourself.

Our local high school student body has over 200 IG accounts that categorize students according to their looks, behavior, affiliations and more.  Many of our students have accounts that we know about and accounts that are not welcome to the adult community.  These young people are bombarded daily with images, messages and standards of “coolness” that are liked and shared.   In this session, we examine: How do we help our students to be smart in the digital environment?  And how have you managed the stress of discovering your child’s digital personality? We will hear from  our youth about their experience in the online space

Topic: Navigating Social Media Part I

BRB, TYSM, Emoticons, Avatars. There is a whole world online where we have zero experience as parents.  But this world completely exists and is REAL.  How do we guide our children and teens through the worlds of gaming and social media? What is internet etiquette and how is it different from what we are used to?  In this session, Blaze Consulting will use the Family Landing Pad, a virtual space for SLUSD parents and caregivers to talk about their own experience of caring for our children and teens during the pandemic.  Join us for an interactive conversation with some young people, who will offer some insight into the real world they are navigating today.
