International Walk and Roll to School Day (IWR2SD)
Wednesday, October 9!
Every October, schools across the county—and the world—celebrate International Walk and Roll to School Day (IWR2SD). The celebration is designed to encourage students, families and the school community to walk, bike, roll, take transit, or use other non-motorized transportation to get to school.
How will you come to school?
Start a healthy and environmentally friendly habit today!

Why Should We Celebrate and Encourage Walking and Rolling to School?
In one generation, the number of kids walking and bicycling to school has dropped from 71% to 18%.
Transportation is responsible for nearly 40% of the Bay Area’s harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
75% of California students are not able to pass basic fitness standards.
Travel to school accounts for approximately 21% of all morning traffic.
It is an easy way for children to get the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

Traffic Safety Reminder
TDear Halkin Dolphin Families,
Thank you for being an essential part of Halkin Elementary's path to continued success! One way you can support your child and our school is coming to school on time and arriving safely. We know that the traffic can be super tricky in the mornings! Here are some tips to avoid the traffic challenges in the morning:
-the Halkin side of Williams street in front of Halkin Elementary and John Muir Middle School is for loading only from 8:00am to 3:30pm. There is NO PARKING in front of Halkin Elementary. Street signs and cones indicate the spaces where there is NO PARKING. Parking and leaving a car unattended creates more traffic in the mornings.-Breakfast and supervision in the front of the cafeteria and front of the school begins at 7:30am. There's NO TRAFFIC at 7:30 and continue to be very little traffic until about 8:00am. There is supervision in front of the school and in the cafeteria until 8:10am.
-Supervision on playgrounds begins at 7:55.
-Please CROSS ONLY AT THE CROSSWALK. There have been accidents in front of our school where cars and people have been hit. These accidents were all at the corners where we often see pedestrians crossing. This is very dangerous.

It seems that there are more ways than ever for children and teens to experience bullying. It can take place at school, in the neighborhood or online. Bullying affects both the children who are being bullied and the adults who care for that child. During this interactive session, we will explore both perspectives. We will look at how you can support your child if they are being bullied and we will acknowledge the harm it causes the parent/caregivers as well. Finally, we will look for tools of resilience to rise above this challenge. Come ready to hear what other parents are trying and to offer your experience. The session is open to all San Leandro parents/caregivers with TK-12th grade students. Raffle Prizes! Spanish and Chinese translations will be provided. October 9, 2024 5-6pm. Join HERE
