San Leandro, CA—San Leandro Unified School District proudly announces that Paulette Smith, principal of Madison Elementary, has been named a recipient of the 2024 Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership. This prestigious recognition, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, honors principals who have made extraordinary contributions to their schools and guided students and staff to excellence.
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel A. Cardona announced the nine recipients, who will be celebrated during the National Blue Ribbon Schools awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Principal Smith’s visionary leadership and commitment to fostering a thriving, inclusive educational environment for all students earned her this high distinction.
"Schools that raise the bar count on school leaders who raise the bar," said Secretary Cardona. "The Bell Award recognizes your relentless dedication and celebrates your impact on your school and your students."
Named after the second U.S. Secretary of Education, Terrel H. Bell, this award highlights principals who have steadfastly committed to educational equity and excellence. Smith was nominated by her school community as part of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, and her leadership has been instrumental in Madison Elementary’s continued success.
Superintendent Dr. Mike McLaughlin remarked, "Principal Paulette Smith embodies leadership that uplifts students, staff, and the community. Her commitment to creating a high-achieving, inclusive school culture inspires us all. We are incredibly proud of her well-deserved recognition."
