Greetings James Monroe,
This is principal McNeil. Remember that this Sunday we turn our clocks back one hour! Fall Back is This Sunday! We had a fabulous Fall Festival and Costume Parade! A huge shout out and Thank You to all the parents and staff who made our day so FUN! For more photos, follow us on Facebook for James Monroe Elementary School (with the Eagle!) Student Council: For 4th and 5th Grade students running for Student Council Offices, Speeches will be on Nov. 4th, and voting will take place Nov. 5th. Please check in with 5th grade teacher, Ms. Diehl, for questions. You can email Ms. Diehl at sdiehl@slusd.us if you have questions regarding our Student Council Elections timelines/procedures. You can also click this link and refer to the flyer. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IAOUhhrSW49U0ZHsbMAxME2dXZwwGYGLSDsMzF1oTuA/edit?usp=gmail The only change is that speeches will be Nov. 4th (to accommodate some fourth graders who will be on a field trip Nov. 5th.) Many campaign posters are up around school, so make sure you check them out when you are on campus. Students did a great job! Early Dismissal: Additional Early dismissal days on Thursday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 8th for Report Card Preparation. TK/K Dismissal at 11:40 1st-5th Grade Dismissal at 1:50 Thank you and please plan accordingly.
Veteran's Day: Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11th. No school to honor of Veteran's Day.
Make Up Picture Day: Make up Picture Day will be Friday, November 15th. If your student did not take photos, they will take them Friday, Nov. 15th. If you want to retake your student's pictures, you will need to return the entire order in the envelope.
Ruby, Sylvia, and Mamie, Better Together Day: Next month we will celebrate Ruby Bridges Day. Ruby Bridges was the first African American student who attended a formerly white only school in Louisiana. We will celebrate some of the courageous children who made it possible for all kids, regardless of race, to go to school together. We will highlight Sylvia Mendez, who was a Latina student who fought to attend a white only school in Southern California, and Mamie Tape, an Asian girl who fought to attend a white only school in San Francisco, in 1885. More information to come on this important recognition of children who are/were heroes, and made a significant contribution in the world, and for our communities. We are inviting 3rd-5th grade students to write speeches about why we are "Better Together." Students will share their speeches in an assembly on Nov. 14th in the MPR for the whole school. Please encourage your 3rd-5th grader to write a speech and share their ideas. Ms. Watkins and I will be supporting speech writers as well! Speeches are due no later than Nov. 7th, by the end of the day, so we can practice and get ready. Any student (3rd-5th grade) who would like to do a speech, can reach out to their teacher, Ms. Watkins, or myself, to get help all along the way (writing/performing.)
Bike Mobile: Saturday, Nov. 16th from 10-1pm the Bike Mobile will be at Monroe. This will be an opportunity to bring old broken bikes, and get them fixed and refurbished! Last year it was very busy and we had to turn folks away! Come early if you want to get your bike fixed! We can take about the first 20 biles that show up (this is just an estimate.)
Have a safe and fun Halloween, and have a great weekend (yes there is school tomorrow!)
