principal Update
Greetings James Monroe,

This is principal McNeil with an update.

We had our James Monroe election assembly today, and the students did AMAZING! They gave fabulous speeches with tons of confidence, and showed so much dedication to our school. Our fourth and fifth graders will vote for their Student Council Officers tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 5th. While we are voting in our National Election, our kids will be voting in our school election! This is very exciting and we are all looking forward to see who will be voted in as our next James Monroe School Student Leadership Team! Winners will be announced Wednesday, Nov. 6th.

Early Dismissal:
There will be Early dismissal days on Thursday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 8th for Report Card Preparation.
There will be no clubs on Thursday and Friday this week (Nov. 7 and 8.) due to the early dismissal.
TK/K Dismissal at 11:40
1st-5th Grade Dismissal at 1:50
Thank you and please plan accordingly.

Veteran's Day:
Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11th. No school to honor our Veterans on Veteran's Day.

Make Up Picture Day:
Make up Picture Day will be Friday, November 15th. If your student did not take photos, they will take them Friday, Nov. 15th. If you want to retake your student's pictures, you will need to return the entire order in the envelope.

Ruby, Sylvia, and Mamie--Better Together Day:
Next month we will celebrate Ruby Bridges Day. Ruby Bridges was the first African American student who attended a formerly white only school in Louisiana. We will celebrate some of the courageous children who made it possible for all kids, regardless of race, to go to school together. We will highlight Sylvia Mendez, who was a Latina student who fought to attend a white only school in Southern California, and Mamie Tape, an Asian girl who fought to attend a white only school in San Francisco, in 1885. More information to come on this important recognition of children who are/were heroes, and made a significant contribution in the world, and for our communities.
We are inviting 3rd-5th grade students to write speeches about why we are "Better Together." Students will share their speeches in an assembly on Nov. 14th in the MPR for the whole school. Please encourage your 3rd-5th grader to write a speech and share their ideas. Ms. Watkins and I will be supporting speech writers as well! Speeches are due no later than Nov. 7th, by the end of the day, so we can practice and get ready. Any student (3rd-5th grade) who would like to do a speech, can reach out to their teacher, Ms. Watkins, or myself, to get help all along the way (writing/performing.)

Bike Mobile:
Saturday, Nov. 16th from 10-1pm the Bike Mobile will be at Monroe. This will be an opportunity to bring old broken bikes, and get them fixed and refurbished! Last year it was very popular and busy and we had to turn folks away! Come early if you want to get your bike fixed! We can take about the first 20 biles that show up (this is just an estimate.)

Thanksgiving Break:
Looking ahead, No school for students the week of Nov. 25th=29th for Thanksgiving Break.

Have a wonderful week and don't forget to vote by Tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 5th! If your child is feeling any anxiety surrounding the National Election, please reassure them that at James Monroe they are safe and will be cared for and loved regardless of whatever happens in the larger national context. That goes ALL ways...Our learning community will support and love each other regardless of what outside voices may say. We will be strong in our resolve that love and compassion are the foundation for our learning community.

Don't forget to appreciate this post so that I know you have received this information. Lost of crucial dates coming up and we love knowing that you are in the know of what is going on at Monroe! We are partners and we are Better Together!

Love,
principal McNeil
