principal Update
Greetings James Monroe,

This is principal McNeil with an update.

Thanks to all the families who came to our Project Sharing Morning. It was great to see everyone at our school, engaging with us in our learning! Please follow our Facebook page at "James Monroe Elementary School," to see the photos!

Our 2/3 and 3rd grade classes will have a mini bake sale to sell the last items (donuts and cookies,) at 3pm tomorrow on the front lawn. All proceeds go to support local Ohlone organizations.

Lunar New Year:
We are excited to celebrate the Year of the Snake with all of you!

--We encourage all students to wear their special Lunar New Year outfits (if they have one) on Wednesday, January 29th. If you do not have a special Lunar New Year outfit, we encourage you to wear RED, the lucky color for the Lunar New Year!
--Tuesday, February 4th we will have a very special Lion/Dragon dance performance from Lion Dance EM, a renowned Dance Group from San Francisco. Shows will start at 10:00am and 10:45am, and parents/guardians are welcome to attend! We encourage you to wear a special outfit or RED on this day as well.
--We are STILL collecting small donations for our student's lucky envelopes. Thank you so much to those who have already donated.  Label your donation, "Lunar New Year." You can also Venmo us at: @Monroepto (look for the Eagle!)

February Boys and Girls Club Camp:
Boys and Girls Club will have a free three day camp (Feb. 19-21) during our February Break.

Important 5th Grade Outdoor Education Meeting: Monday, January 27th, 6pm, Monroe MPR and Zoom Link (Hybrid):
Outdoor Education is an amazing FREE opportunity for all 5th graders in SLUSD. Our Outdoor Education trip for 5th graders this year will be March 17th-19th. This is a three day trip to Camp Arroyo, WOLF School, in Livermore. We stay in heated cabins, with bunk beds, and indoor bathrooms including showers. It is all inclusive: All meals and snacks are provided. It is a trip of a lifetime for our 5th graders, and we encourage all 5th graders to attend. We invite parent chaperones who are level 2 volunteers (fingerprinted by the Department of Justice) and who are approved by us. Ms. Watkins and I (principal McNeil) will take turns at Camp so that one of us is always available and physically present at Camp. Please attend this important meeting if you have a fifth grader, if you have questions or concerns about this field trip. You may also reach out to your child's teacher or me, principal McNeil. Two fifth grade teachers will also be attending/supervising camp with the kids, and no other groups will be at Camp while we are there. The camp area is fenced in with a keypad gate entry system so it is safe and secure. It is also close to home (Livermore) and very accessible if needed.

--Let's meet to discuss plans for Black History Month (Tuesday, Jan. 28th at 8:15am with Coffee and Donuts)
